The British West India Regiments Heritage Trust (BWIRHT) is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to preserving and promoting the proud military heritage of the West Indies.
Our Mission
BWIRHT is dedicated to commemorating and acknowledging the military heritage of West Indian and Caribbean service personnel; educating and enlightening the public about their service, sacrifice, and contributions; and advocating for meaningful recognition within the armed forces community and wider society both now and for the future.
Our Activities
Commemorate & Acknowledge
- Host the annual British West Indian Regiments Day.
- Lead an annual heritage battlefield tour.
- Participate in national and international remembrance ceremonies.
Educate & Enlighten
- Deliver educational programmes for adults and young people.
- Develop and share learning resources on British West Indian Regiments heritage.
- Contribute to academic research within the armed services community.
Promote & Access
- Support services and resources to help West Indian and Caribbean British Armed Forces personnel (serving, transitioning, or veterans) navigate life beyond the military.
- Collaborate with armed forces charities, veteran organisations, and local authorities.
- Engage with policymakers to embed West Indian and Caribbean perspectives in policy and public discourse.
Our Name
British West India Regiments Heritage Trust (BWIRHT) pronounced ‘Bright’ – is formed of an amalgamation of the West India Regiments (WIR 1795-1927 & 1958-1962) and the British West Indies Regiment (BWIR 1915-1921).
Meet the team
BWIRHT is led by a board of trustees with expertise which includes military service, education, heritage, public policy, and community leadership. They are supported by a Council of Volunteers, made up of veterans, reservists, serving personnel, and family members, all united in their commitment to honouring and advancing the impact and legacy of West Indian and Caribbean military service.
