The leadership of BWIRHT continues the legacy of this pioneer. Each year, this pioneer is honoured with a toast. The late Mr. Alan Wilmot was a distinguished Jamaican-born Royal Navy veteran and a tireless advocate for the recognition of Caribbean contributions to the British Armed Forces. A member of the Royal Navy during the Second World War and later of the Royal Air Force, Mr. Wilmot dedicated much of his post-service life to preserving the legacy of Black and Caribbean servicemen and women.
He played a pivotal role in the campaign that led to the creation of the Memorial Gates at Constitution Hill in London, established to honour the service of African, Caribbean, and South Asian soldiers in the World Wars. His voice, presence, and advocacy were instrumental in ensuring this chapter of history was given the public recognition it so richly deserved. Mr. Wilmot’s enduring legacy lives on in the memorials he helped shape and the many lives he inspired.
